Painting and weathering continued today!

I took the box and suit outside to get them dirty. Let’s start with the box! It’s very clean, but we need to fix this.

Using a variety of weathering sprays and flat black paint, I misted different colors on the box. I focused on the upper corners and edges. Result!

Weathered Mono mask.

Next, I worked on Mono’s suit.

I applied a mist of flat black spray paint to darken the pants and shirt, and some brown weathering spray on it all, including the jacket.

My son was super excited to put things on when I bought it all inside! He just put on the jacket and mask for now.

Next, I worked on painting the key. I applied another few coats of Modge Podge to the key, but I really wasn’t happy with how slowly it was filling in some of the paper lines underneath. I decided I could do better with several coats of PlastiDip. Here you can see the initial coat of black.

After a few coats, here’s what it looked like when it was dry.

Still not happy overall, I decided to take a chance and spray the key all over with metallic gold PlastiDip. I’m so glad I did! One coat wasn’t bad. I thought I could do better, so I kept going by applying a few more coats of black PlastiDip and let it dry.

Then I hit it with a thick coat of black Hammered finish paint. This made it super shiny!

I was getting frustrated with how some of the paper lines were still visible. So while the Hammered paint was still wet, I applied a dusting of metallic gold PlastiDip, going thicker and thicker with the coats. The PlastiDip dries fast, and it began to create a very cool crackled effect that I was not expecting! I moved it into the sun while I painted to help accelerate the effect. Here’s the result:

I am thrilled with how this turned out. It looks like beat up old metal now!

I will probably add some more black and maybe some brown to further age the key in some spots. It’s so awesome when something not expected turns out much better than I could have hoped for!
